It can be difficult choosing between a pickup truck and an SUV these days, especially if you don’t need the size and capability of a full-size truck. But if you occasionally want or need the capability of a truck bed, but you also want the all-around versatility of a midsize crossover SUV for commuting and family duties around Martinsville, Danville, Rocky Mount, and Greensboro, the 2022 Honda Ridgeline might be exactly what you’re looking for.
The exterior styling was refreshed very recently, and the Ridgeline is a little more truck-like and a little less SUV than it used to be, but it still manages to straddle the two camps very nicely, and it is probably even more appealing to an even wider audience.
There are four different models to choose from in the 2022 Honda Ridgeline lineup. The first model in the family is the Ridgeline Sport, and from there, the range goes to the RTL, RTL-E, and the top-of-the-line Black Edition. There’s no such thing as a two-wheel-drive 2022 Ridgeline as every model comes with Honda’s Intelligent Variable Torque Management (i-VTM4) AWD System and Intelligent Traction Management with four driving modes of Normal, Snow, Mud, and Rock.
You could probably imagine a truck like the 2022 Ridgeline being equipped with a small-displacement four-cylinder base engine these days, but Honda has decided to stick with a more powerful and more capable V-6 instead. The unit in question is a 3.5-liter V-6 which puts out a healthy 280 horsepower and 262 lb.-ft. of torque which gets sent to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission with Shift-By-Wire and paddle shifters.
Depending on how the 2022 Honda Ridgeline is equipped, the maximum payload can be a pretty useful 1,500 pounds and all versions are capable of towing up to a maximum of 5,000 pounds. The all-wheel-drive system does deliver a degree of off-road capability, but it really comes into its own on-road when driving conditions are at their most challenging.
The Ridgeline is probably better equipped at the entry-level than the majority of larger trucks, which is another reason why the Honda is an attractive proposition for those shopping for an SUV as well as those with their hearts set on a pickup. The Ridgeline Sport comes with LED headlights, keyless start, cloth upholstery, a full set of power features, dual-action tailgate, 18-inch alloy wheels, tri-zone climate control, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
For a relatively few more dollars, the RTL looks like excellent value for money as it builds on the base model’s already impressive standard equipment list with the likes of leather upholstery, a power sunroof, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a power-adjustable passenger seat, heated front seats, a power-sliding rear window, satellite radio, and blind-spot monitoring.
The 2022 Honda Ridgeline is a tremendously versatile and capable vehicle designed to fulfill a variety of different roles and to suit an equally wide variety of different drivers. The Ridgeline can be a great all-around family vehicle, a workhorse, a daily commuter, or an outdoor adventure vehicle.
