Forget everything you think you know about the Honda Insight is your current knowledge is based on previous versions of the nameplate because the 2022 Honda Insight is a completely different car from its predecessors. It may still be a compact hybrid car, but this third generation is a four-door sedan rather than a five-door liftback, and being a hybrid is only part of its appeal rather than its primary objective. The 2022 Insight is a sophisticated, refined, and quite a beautiful car that just happens to also be exclusively powered by a hybrid system.
One element leftover from the days when hybrid cars were still something of a novelty in the compact lineup of trim levels in the 2022 Honda Insight family as there are just two extremely well-equipped versions of the car to choose between. The first of the pair is the Insight EX and the higher-spec version is the Insight Touring, but the EX doesn’t look or feel in any way “entry-level.” There are plenty of styling cues here that have been borrowed from Honda’s other incredibly successful sedans of recent times, which is no bad thing, but the Insight still manages to retain an air of aesthetic independence and its own character.
A hybrid-only powertrain may no longer be the main headline-grabbing reason for the Insight’s place in Honda’s model lineup as there are plenty of other hybrids in the family these days, but it’s still an important attribute of the car that deserves closer attention. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the hybrid powertrain here has been tuned for a comfortable and enjoyable driving experience and superb fuel economy rather than top speed and breakneck acceleration.
Unlike almost every other hybrid around at the moment, the Insight actually forgoes a traditional transmission in favor of a system that directly clutches the engine for the best possible efficiency. The system is based around a 1.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine producing 107 horsepower which is assisted by a 129-horsepower electric motor that spends the majority of its time driving the front wheels. All of which produce a combined output of 151 horsepower for the exclusively front-wheel drive Insight.
In terms of the broad umbrella term of standard features, the 2022 Honda Insight wants for little or nothing, and that goes for active and passive safety equipment as well as driver and passenger comfort, convenience, and entertainment features. EX standard features include an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, two USB ports, fog lights, split-folding rear seats, high-quality cloth upholstery, remote start, LED lights, HD Radio, automatic climate control, and a full set of power features.
Standard equipment also includes the Honda Sensing suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies, which includes the Collision Mitigation Braking System, Road Departure Mitigation, Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow, Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Auto High-Beam and the Blind Spot Information system. The Insight, therefore, gets a full five-star rating for overall safety from the NHTSA and the coveted Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS.
The 2022 Honda Insight is one of the most fuel-efficient sedans you can buy with EPA ratings of 55 mpg in the city, 49 mpg on the highway, and 52 mpg, but there’s so much more to this stunning car than just its fuel economy.
