The 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback makes up for the lack of a coupe with its sloping roofline, unique honeycomb front grille, and 4.9 inches less rear overhang than the sedan. The exterior styling does alter the proportions of the Civic to some extent. Still, there’s no suggestion that the back looks abbreviated, and the rear glass tapers attractively into a subtle rear spoiler. You’ll look as good as you’ll feel when you drive one of these in and around Martinsville, Danville, Rocky Mount, Greensboro, or anywhere else.
Four different trim levels are available in the 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback lineup. The entry-level version is called the LX, and then the range goes to the Sport and EX-L until it reaches its pinnacle with the range-topping Sport Touring.
The exterior styling of the all-new 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback is a bit toned down from previous models, but this further increases the broad appeal of a car that already attracts a sizeable admiring audience. The Civic Hatchback might not be a direct replacement for a coupe, but despite their sleek and sporty lines, the coupes didn’t appeal to enough people to overcome a two-door format’s relative lack of practicality. The Civic Hatchback is still elegant and sporty with a coupe-like sloping roofline, but it also piles in with a ton of practicality thanks to its rear doors and liftback.
You have two engine options for the 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback. The standard powerplant for the LX and Sport trim levels is a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated inline-four that develops 158 horsepower and 138 lb.-ft. of torque. The power gets sent to the rear wheels of the LX trim through a standard CVT transmission, which also comes with dual-mode paddle-shifters in the Sport trim. The LX gets fuel economy ratings of 30 mpg in the city, 38 mpg on the highway, and 33 mpg combined, while the Sport trim sees those numbers reduced by one mpg each.
The alternative powerplant is a more powerful 1.5-liter turbo-four that you’ll find under the hood of the EX-L and Sport Touring versions of the Civic Hatchback. This engine produces 180 horsepower and 177 lb.-ft. of torque, which again goes to the front wheels through the standard CVT transmission. The EX-L gets the Hatchback’s best fuel economy ratings of 31/39/35 mpg for city/highway/combined driving, while the Sport Touring returns 30/37/33 mpg due to its heavier specification. Sport and Sport Touring models are also available with a six-speed manual transmission for those who like a more engaging driving experience.
Civic Hatchback is no exception. All trim levels have standard automatic emergency braking, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and more as part of the Honda Sensing suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies. All that has helped the 2022 Civic achieve a full five-star rating for overall safety from the NHTSA and Top Safety Pick+ status from the IIHS.
The standard specification is generous at every level, and the Civic now offers features you’d typically expect to find in luxury models costing considerably more than the Honda. For the first time, the 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback is now available with a premium Bose sound system, wireless Apple CarPlay integration, and a nine-inch infotainment touchscreen. EX-L and Sport Touring trim levels also come with standard leather-trimmed seats heated in the front and a one-touch power moonroof, while the Sport Touring also comes with the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System
The Civic is a legend among affordable compact cars for their quality and value for money, and rightly so, and the 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback more than lives up to that reputation.
